Summer has ended as far as work goes and I was lucky enough to be up to speed when it came to be back in school. Actually i was ready for work, because I feel it has value. Being educators we are asked to do valuable work everyday and that usually involves motion. I was in motion this summer by attending a conference, by reading, by unplugging and decompressing the past year of teaching, and by moving back into a house. The conference was ISTE 2010 and it was in Denver. I got to see some cool speakers and not only saw some of my tweeps, but added to my PLN. (I heard Marzano talk about his research, and I also heard Alan November speak— I recommend everyone checking out these educators). What I discovered, and what is pushing me back to writing is the need for reflection and the continued motion of my learning in that direction. When i was lucky enough to be around some great teachers at the beginning of this PLN process, and when this site got started i was unaware of how much it would transform my learning and how much it continues to impact my teaching. My blogging, is something that is an accelerant for learning. In my motion this year I want to continue with the motion of reflection in this digital way. I hope all of our listeners and subscribers (who i really want to thank) continue their motion in positive ways that provide growth for all that they need and all those they touch.
In that sense, and the reality that summer is over I wish you all a good year and want you to all watch this motion based video to help you say goodbye to summer but also inspire you to continue motion for your year.

For me to believe in leadership it’s the ones who shake me up and move me out of my comfort zones that have always made the most impact. I find myself in a position now speaking sometimes to the top down model and they usually smile and agree when I converse about technology. The believers have most often tasted the waters. The bring the laptop they know they need to drop the paper calender, the for most other avenues are leading by example and I thank them for that. But I challenge them to keep a website going and move beyond email. Shake things up, challenge the staff. Believe in the power of social media because you choose to shake the snowglobe that is when it is at it’s most beautiful.

And the mountain views and fresh mountain air come into play as I head to my first national tech conference. I am happy to be here with my team and I am ready to see my PLN and add to it here in Denver. I kept thinking on the way here what are the things that I will see and e dedicated educators likely to say that will change my world. I look forward to a Monday of learning. I will keep everyone posted both here and on my Twitter feed.

NETA 2010 has come and gone. I am always impressed with what I see and hear at the conference. Sometimes in the keynotes and breakouts, but mostly with my PLN and the conversations that happen. Sometimes they happen by chance in passing, sometimes they happen in meeting places like the PLN Plaza that is the unique space for those generative conversations. I only see these people, who have become my colleagues and friends, in person once a year. It is amazing to me how welcome and in-place that they make me feel. They give me space for a voice and even if i am working stuff out that they have already considered i get the room to work thru it out loud and with them. They are truly great educators and mentors. If you haven’t started yet, i can only say that you need to grow and invest in your own PLN. My growth as an educator has been exponentially exploded by them.

It was a time of revelation and reflection for me. I had just one year ago been student teaching and had been turned down for presenting at NETA 09. This year I got the opportunity to present twice. Though of course I want it to always go perfect, the big point to remember and celebrate was the fact that I am moving in the direction of positively influencing the face of education. We all are.

Remember to keep on keeping on. We are in a long race, not a sprint. Education is for the resilient

By a friend who happens to be an excellent science teacher:

The global view, philosophical foundations of, and complexity within the concept towards educating exceptional students fills volumes of texts, has generated lengthy legislation, consumes courts attention at every level, yet is fleshed out each and every day in this countries classrooms, in spite of this perplexing and ineffective bureaucracy.

Are students really kept from receiving services to decrease a districts costs? Is there really a problem with the fox watching the hens? Are districts filled with, what designers and overseers of policy claim, individuals whose first tendency is to shirk, subvert, and steal, rather than educate children? What gain does an individual obtain in the field of education through shirking, subverting, and stealing?

Education cannot be based on capitalistic models. There is no limiting factor one can use to trim the fat. Every product has to be edited and polished, there is no waste, no sub par reduced price category. Humans are not products in the first place.

Dogs chase their tails trying to assess learning. Reducing learning to a stimulus response measurement cheapens the entire evolved human adaptation labeled intelligence. Limiting learning to a change of behavior places our abilities well below other species on this earth. So much of learning is below the water, only the tip of the iceberg is actually observed, or measured, yet this tiny piece of learning is what the entire accountability piece is based on. Grades are subjective in the first place.

Riding a bike can be observed. You can measure the distance one rides a bike. You can tell a human to use both hands, pedal with both feet, etc. You can observe changes in the student’s behavior during each attempt at riding the bike, but this only scratches the surface of assessing learning I feel. The total learning within the student cannot be measured. Possibly you can measure the new neurological connections made within the brain, but this still cheapens this experience. There is so much more to riding a bike than what you or I can see when watching someone ride a bike. Riding a bike comes from within the learner, beyond even what the learner is conscious of themselves. This is not entirely measurable.

So lets stick to what we can measure, distance. It’s such a small portion of what one needs to learn to ride a bike, though since it can be measured, we will go with this standard. Seems acceptable, until humans enter the picture. Each of us is unique, and therefore will perform uniquely. So what is acceptable? Lets test Lance Armstrong and Stephen Hawking. Don’t they both need to be proficient by the end of grade X? We can measure distance, so lets hold all individuals accountable to this subjective criterion. Are there points available for flair? Who will decide acceptable stylish criteria for flair? Your tastes or mine, which is more important, or does it fall on the persons desk with the largest paycheck?

What’s wrong with districts reporting on their ability to educate all of their students? Why are districts the fox? Though I am not remembering my history, am I. Society once felt, or someone once felt, that it was an inefficient use of funds to educate exceptional students. This is where the civil rights come into the picture, as all students deserve a free appropriate education in the least restrictive environment. So, back in the day, districts were the fox.

Alas, like a dog chasing its tail, I return to questions, how can districts effectively report accountability other than using standardized tests? Is there even an answer to this question?

What am I going to do tomorrow to ensure every student learns in the 48 minutes we will share together?

How will I know if the students have learned? How will I know what they have learned?

Do I control their learning to specifically only what I want them to learn? Could I, even if I tried?

Should they be allowed to learn what they feel is important?

It’s easy to begin to feel nostalgic towards the end of a season, year, career, etc. I know many people graduating in the upcoming weeks, and I urge you all to take time and celebrate how far you’ve come and how hard you’ve worked to achieve this triumph. For me, it was easy to overlook my accomplishments because it seemed like everyone around me was doing the same thing. It was the satus quo. Only 1/3 have a college degree in the United States. The majority of adults in this country have no idea what it feels like to walk across a stage and shake the hand of a Dean. Celebrate your progress. Take a moment to forget about deadlines, car troubles, family issues, and errands to explore your own personal and professional growth. If you are not graduating yet, think about the steps you’ve made in the last year. How have you changed? How have you grown? These things mean more than any grade on a paper or a degree in a leather binding.
If you are currently teaching- Thank you! You are changing the lives of students every day, and in the face of a lot of adversity around, you continue to meet objectives and obstacles presented to you. It’s true this is only my first year teaching, and I feel I have a tremendous amount of growing to do, but I know my decision to teach and to be in schools is the right one.
I am counting the days, don’t believe I’m not, but I am trying to make the most of the last few days because I am realizing what it means to move on to another class of students. I am already remembering back to our first days together and how our relationships have evolved. No, not all were for the best, but they all changed and adapted. We all grew. I’m off to teach, but I might add some more later. Feel free to comment with your own accomplishments below. Feel selfish for a moment.

The weather might hit 50 degrees for the first time this year today, and the students are as frenzied as the teachers. Students have had a hard time focusing towards the end of the day, and more are making plans to be outside with friends. I am right along with them. The days are getting longer, and I am so excited to be out on the bike paths and on the golf course again. There is something to be said for having the opportunity to unwind from being inside all day teaching by going out into the world. I am getting tired of my couch and the treadmill. Now if only I could begin harnessing more of the students’ energy for myself. Hang in there, everyone, spring break is almost here.

I have taken this place for granted…and have been under appreciating it’s abilities. It’s like that friend you run into after years apart-It’s hard to remember how you fell out of touch in the first place. The fact is relationships take a lot of work to keep strong. I have survived my first semester as a teacher, and I’m loving it (almost) every day
I need to now turn back and begin reflecting on how I made it to this point. There are a few student teachers running around the halls today for their first days of their last semester in college. I wish all of you out there in the same boat good luck. Teaching is truly worth everything you put into it. Congratulations, and I hope to be back again to start/join the conversations more in the very near future. Sorry I was away for so long.

It seems that lessons are where you find them. I have been involved in a lot of planning and meetings and all the other stuff that as an Instructional Coach steers me away from the classroom. But once again as I have found before students are the salvation. I got a chance to work in multiple classrooms last week and the students energy infected me faster than H1N1. Teaching for me is so much a learning process and that is the draw. All of us get frustrated from time to time but the advantage we have with teaching is that we can adjust. We can say from here I will change this or strive for that. The reasons we come to teach are varied but I find for most of the people I see the commitment is deep and meaningful. So if you get worn, stop adjust and say. From here I will…….

We started our journey with our first Edu-video by filming for Laurie’s Class at Concordia, almost 2 years later it is being used as a reflection piece. Thanks to all who collaborated and added to this ongoing education wave.

Dear NYAT
We watched the good ‘ol multigenre video in my Experiences in Writing class today. It, in fact, started off our class and I’ve never used it at the beginning before. But something clicked….clicked like you could feel it moving in the room. (If I could name “it,” I believe my dissertation would write itself.)

It struck me today as I was watching and laughing and remembering those students and their writing that while my teaching and learning essence is unchanged, I am more a teacher than I was when you filmed that class with their work. And it reminded me of what you two remind me about much of the time.

To be a teacher (and learner for that matter) is to never settle, to always move toward the mores, and to continue to rest with and alongside those that believe in vision and the potential that vision can illuminate.

Thank you for the indirect reminder and for letting me grow alongside you two visionaries.

Laurie

I have had a lot of success and even more failure in the past quarter of this year, and I have been holding that in instead of sharing with those that check this site. If you are reading right now I owe you an apology for not being a consistent poster. It has felt good to take a break from it all, but I have lost sight of why I started in the first place.
If I can jump right in- and I can, it’s 50% my site – today was tough. I was so happy I had an active hands on activity planned for the first few days back from break. I thought it would give students a chance to ease back into the classroom without the need to be constantly talking over me trying to lecture or interrupting each other during individual work. The problem, though, was that they are still enjoying talking over each other and insulting one another than they are enjoying working on these posters. We are going to struggle to get it done on time, and it is the first time all semester I have fallen behind where I wanted to be. It’s frustrating, and I’ve had to make compromises with students to get us back on track. I know it isn’t the end of the world, and the majority of the students are doing quality work, it’s just hard to be ok with the level of…ahem…enthusiasm?…of the students. I know things will settle down, and I’m hoping a new and vastly improved seating chart might cool the jets of some high fliers. Why is it we always feel we need vacations after vacations?

-Jarred

I (Jarred) am lucky to have a great support system in my new school, and wanted to see what the first day of school feels like for a true veteran of the field. Doreen has been an amazing team leader for me so far, and has welcomed any question or problem I’ve had with open arms. I know people like her are not in every school, but I wish they could so every new or pre-service teacher could see what it means to find a great “fit” in a school. Here is Doreen’s version of first day jitters:

I’m in such good spirits today! It’s Friday and it’s been a great start to the school year.
As always, I spent several sleepless nights before the first day of school. Do I have everything ready? How will I do things differently this year? What more can I do to make school fun and exciting? One would think when I’ve had 30 first days of school I’d feel more at ease with it, but the “butterflies” come each year. I guess I’m glad they do. I think it means that I’m still excited about what I do. I must admit that the job never gets any easier and actually seems much more difficult than when I started. But I still walk out of school each day, glad for the job I have, for the opportunities I have to make a difference, and for the outstanding people I work with. At least I feel like that almost every day!

Thanks Doreen. I encourage anyone else that wants to share their first day/week stories with us here (hint-hint CT’s!!). As a pre-service and now a service teacher, it is always nice to know the nerves never go away!

I sometimes have a problem allowing myself to see the good in things that are happening in my life. A week ago I was uncertain about my path and if I would be teaching beyond subbing this fall. I just got offered and accepted a job in the local district of Lincoln Public Schools and I am excited, nervous and hopeful. I will be an Instructional Technology Coach, which is a newly created position. I feel a bit as if I about to enter the Wonka Factory and am not sure what to expect. There is a lot of room for creative development so I am excited. I want to say thank you to all in my personal learning network who have helped bring me to this point. Thinking about and reflecting on education with you all has been huge to my professional development. Tomorrow I will meet the rest of the team I will be working on and I am looking forward to being a change agent in the district. I will keep you all posted as to how things look and what cool new projects are coming along in my realm. I know now that I will be expanding my digital presence and working to integrate tech into curricula. Collaboration is the name of the game on this block. Again thanks and to all the new teachers out there this year, good luck and keep in touch.

Hey everyone, this is Jarred. I just wanted to drop a quick note about how great and relaxing this summer has been. Dale and I have been hard at work in many avenues of our lives, and this site has unfortunately taken a bit of a back seat as we figure out the next steps in our lives. I was recently hired at Mickle Middle School here in Lincoln and my first day of new teacher training/orientation starts tomorrow. I am super excited to start, and I can’t wait to share my first year experiences with you all. I want to extend a huge thank you to this network as well as all of you that have helped me get to this point. I wouldn’t be here without you all.
In the near future, you will see a lot more content on this site, as we will each have new experiences and thoughts to share. Keep on the lookout, and do not be afraid to add suggestions about what you would like to see on this site.

Wish me luck!

Hey everyone, I trust all is well for all of our listeners and followers. Summer is fully here, humidity at no charge and I believe it is getting to my brain. We are teaching this week!!!!!!!!! Podcasting and movie making with the Bright Lights Program. It is really amazing to see the students become excited about producing their own work with new forms of media and we are really knocked out by the things they are turning out. Still looking for a spot in education in the meantime. Stay tuned for more podcasts coming soon and let us know what current projects you are undertaking. Thanks again

I was watching the President give a speech to a graduating class of 2009 tonite and it inspired me, as his speeches often do. The point was that the body of work that we put forth is never complete, nor is it diminished by time. The things we do, in our everyday, the little stones that we stack up do become a mountain and every action we take matters. As we strive to become better teachers, better learners, better people we must realize that our passion and our talent is not measured by one event or achievement, but by the body of work that we put forth. Good luck to all who are graduating, and starting the next phase of the journey, we support you and believe in you.

Last week the NYAT team went up to North Platte Nebraska to talk with and present for ESU #16. We talked with all of the LAN managers for a few hours about their current projects and future plans. It was a great experience to have as a couple of professionals. We talked about everything from social networking to twitter to of course conversational podcasting. Greater Nebraska is an interesting area to be watching, they are really committed to working technology to overcome the geographical challenges in their area. A great group of people, we want to give a great shout out to all the early adopters of tech.

Here is a post by our good friend Logan, again crushing our mindgrapes with his well read head.

Dear NYAT:

I’ve been enjoying some G.K. Chesterton writing on public education.
Have you heard of him? He was in the circle with C.S. Lewis and J.
R.R. Tolkein. He’s written on virtually every subject and is
absolutely brilliant. He forces me to think like no other writer I
know. Here are a couple snippets to get us thinking:

“There is no such thing as education. The thing is merely a loose
phrase for the passing on to others of whatever truth or virtue we
happen to have ourselves. It is typical of our time that the more
doubtful we are about the value of philosophy, the more certain we are
about the value of education. That is to say, the more doubtful we
are about whether we have any truth, the more certain we are
(apparently) that we can teach it to our children.”

“[We are] shrinking from . . . the responsibility of affirming the
truth of our human tradition and handing it on with a voice of
authority, an unshaken voice. That is the one eternal education; to
be sure enough that something is true that you dare to tell it to a
child.”

Chesterton also talks about open-mindedness NOT being a virtue, that
the human mind is designed to come to conclusions. He says, “An open
mind is really a mark of foolishness, like an open mouth.” I’m
reminded of the whale shark who relieves its hunger by what’s called
“passive eating,” whereby it lets its mouth hang open and whatever
floats in, it swallows. As Chesterton puts it: “The object of opening
the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something
solid.”

Chesterton used to be taught in nearly every English speaking
university in the world. If you read him, you’ll understand quite
fast why he’s not read much any more at the collegiate level–he
speaks quite frankly about religion and politics and without apologies
as to how his faith influences his opinions. He was incredibly famous
in his own time and would often publicly debate the greatest minds of
his time–George Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells chief among them. My
favorite quote of his is from a woman who came up to him on the street
and said to him, “Everybody seems to know you, Mr. Chesterton.” He
replied, “If they don’t, they ask.”

If you want a suggestion for a book this summer, I’d recommend “G.K.
Chesterton: The Apostle of Common Sense” by Dale Ahlquist. It’s an
overview of 12 of his most famous works–a quick and easy read that
will supply much to talk about and debate. Here’s a quote about
Chesterton from the book,

“This absent-minded, overgrown elf of a man, who filled up a room when
he entered it, who laughed at his own jokes and would amuse children
at birthday parties by catching buns in his mouth, this was the man
who wrote a book that led a young atheist named C.S. Lewis to become a
Christian. This was the man who wrote a novel that inspired Michael
Collins to lead a movement for Irish independence. This was the man
who wrote an essay in the Illustrated London News that inspired
Mohandas Gandhi to lead a movement to end British colonial rule in
India. This was the man who wrote a book on Charles Dickens that is
widely considered the best book ever written about that great author.”

Are you thirsty yet for some Chesterton? Drink up, my friends. Drink up.

First I want to wish luck to all my fellow student teachers who took the leap today. We started in our final required piece of the degree puzzle today and while I know that it will be transformative I am a bit sad. I could see the seperation I would face from all of my brilliant colleagues a while ago, but perhaps it was the realization of how hard it will now be to collaborate with them that hit me afterschool today that got me down. Perhaps it is the inevitable step we have to take to grow. Now we are onto a new stage in which we could perhaps missing our own private PLCs we have built. Or perhaps those bonds will grow stronger. Truly we will see and I trust that we can use this site to reflect and check in with people as they continue on the turbulent journey toward a degree

The storm that is student teaching is a-brewing, and all of us main contributers here at NYAT are all entering student teaching starting Monday. I, Jarred, am super excited and nervous to start, but I am hopeful the semester will be full of learning, frustrations, successes, failures, and many new experiences. There has been a little lull of sorts on the site, and we all needed that break time to sort out our own thoughts and schedules. Be ready for our second semester of podcasts and posts, and be sure to continue reading our own personal partitions. We still have about 499 GB of server space for others to join the community in just about any capacity. We want you to join us in our lifestream of ideas related to teaching. We hope the start of the new year has been productive for all and we wish you the best throughout the next semester and beyond.

I, Jarred, wanted to take some of the administrative authority I have and share some words you may not have read on our accompanying blogs–shame on you if you have yet to check these out!

Jed, Dale, Laura, and I all finished our practicums this last Friday, and we have been blogging about our journeys thus far on this page and our own partitions. It has been a mixed bag of experiences for all of us, but I know we all have made substantial progress in becoming the teachers we strive to be in the near future. This space has allowed me to do a lot of thinking aloud, and I thank those of you who have contributed from the bottom of my heart. You have no idea how fulfilling it is to know people out there read and contribute to our professional lifestream. I want to continue to make this a community of people that really care about the future of pre-service teachers and the future of the education system here in the US. I wanted to share a quote I read on Jed’s blog that struck a chord in me…

I want the community of the classroom to be about the citizens of that community and not something else. This community celebrates differences, promotes participation and maximizes membership. It declares, it dreams, and it develops human beings. It is controversial, it’s conversational, and it is anything but conventional. It asks how, it wants to know why, and when it asks when, we all say, “right now.” It has ups it has downs, and there are highs and there are lows, but it has each other. It has moments and momentum, even monotony. It overcomes, it overwhelms. It has similes and metaphors, poetry and prose. It isn’t them and it isn’t me. It’s us, and it’s we. It dares to be different.

It talks.

It listens.

It is everything, and it is nothing, if we don’t make it matter.

Great thoughts, Jed. You are a great friend, and I have no doubt you will continue to change the lives of those you teach.

Jarred

There is just something about the first day/week of school that gets me excited. During my first class we were asked to sit outside and observe/write about our surroundings. I noticed the brand new notebooks that still had crisp edges, backbacks FULL of books, maps in the hands of new students, and and the optimistic smile worn by the vast majority of the population. The sun was shining, many had new shoes, and people seemed excited to be going somewhere-anywhere. The first week of classes often means students are ready to be engaged by classmates and by teachers, and they are generally excited to learn. I believe this to be true because I am a learner and a student. As boring as the first day of class can be, it can also set the tone for the rest of the year. This does not mean we only get one shot to “grab” students, but it does mean we have the opportunity to provide the positive springboard that can feed off the positive energy throughout the year.

How does one do this? Well I don’t have a formula, and I haven’t had the opportunity to teach in a “first day” situation, but I know I need to be myself, and I know I must keep students active and engaged as early as the first day. We allow students to become passive as early as the first day. We lecture and lay guidelines, and set requirements, and we squish the energy right out of them. It is painful to be a part of. The newness always rubs off, but I am totally subscribing to the idea that teachers need to set the stage to expect production and energy from students as early as the first day. Optimism of a new semester and a new class should be a powerful resource teachers use to provide momentum into the course work. I can’t stand leaving a class feeling the first class blues. It is negative for everyone involved.

So I want to know what you have done to capture momentum on the first day, and how did that help set the “mood” of that class for the rest of the year? What about some horror stories? How did you recover from a bad first day with unmotivated students? How do we keep the energy flowing? Can we? I am optimistic we can, but it is the first day.

Here are thoughts from Jed. You may remember him from episode 3. He talks to us about his concerns and solutions about engaging young readers.

This summer, Jarred, Dale and I have been engaged in a professional development book club. We’ve read Hemingway, Morrison, Fitzgerald, and others. We’re trying to accomplish a familiarity with a broader range of literature. Attempting to dig deeper into the heart of the canon, and basically throw around some ideas on exactly how we should teach this stuff. The experience has been most beneficial to me, but not really in the ways I was anticipating.
When we started I was mostly just pumped to be reading. The hustle and bustle of the school year always clutters my life to a point where reading simply doesn’t fit. I was glad that I would be reading with friends and I was hopeful that we could find some teachable books.
There are several concerns that we all share in regards to our future as teachers. How will we come up with enough material to teach a whole year? How do we keep things original and fresh? What happens when we fail? How do we get students to want to learn like we are right now? How do we achieve…well, this?
“This” is basically a place I have come to realize is the only place I want my students to be. “This” is a place where there aren’t necessarily answers, but questions that force us to become better at who we want to become. “This” isn’t safe. “This” is often difficult. But, “this” is entirely necessary. Why? Because “this” is where learning takes place. It’s a community, a backdrop, and a chance to be better.
So how do we achieve it in a classroom? Well, if I knew that I would certainly sleep much better at night. So would Dale. So would Jarred. So would all of you probably. Something that is close to my heart in regards to my profession is the attitude of adolescent males toward reading. There is a lot of research out there suggesting that we need to feed male students books with drugs, sex, and rock and roll. I see the point, and I see the logic behind it, but isn’t this like trying to engage a female student with Gossip Girl novels. Let’s give these students a little more credit. I certainly think that as teachers we need to be intentional with our curriculum selection; however, maybe our approach is the problem, and not our students.
Every student has a desire to feel included. Whether it is on the football team or the D and D club. Why shouldn’t my English class feel more like a place they want to come, as opposed to a place they have to come? Community is a big deal, and students want to feel a part of that. Each student brings their own talents into the classroom, and subsequently has tremendous value to that community. As leaders of the classroom, it should be our number one goal to attempt to utilize each student’s talents in the best way possible. Why do we choose to ignore the student who is an excellent artist when we can use her to illustrate a class written graphic novel? Why push the star quarterback to the locker room when he should be reading ‘The Things They Carried’ so he can understand what real sacrifice and leadership is all about? Why can’t that artist and that quarterback be equally valuable as citizens with the future Yale attendee?
Are teachers doing this? Are we really attempting to make our classrooms a microcosm of what the “real world” is like? In the words of Hemingway, “Isn’t it pretty to think so?”
For me, “this” was a place I thought I would become a better teacher. “This” is actually a place I have become a better learner, and a place where I now realize I’ve always wanted to be. Students want it to. And so, “this” is what we’ll give them.

On July 26th, Chris Lantz was killed in a car accident. Alcohol was involved, and Chris was not wearing his seat belt. Chris had graduated from Bennington High School (Bennington, NE) last May, and was attending University of Nebraska-Kearney. This is my (Jarred’s) Alma Mater and I knew Chris and had seen his parents at many events. I still have two siblings attending the High School, as well. To make matters worse, this is the third automobile accident to claim the life of recent or current Bennington students within the last three years.

It has taken me this long to be able to write about this tragic accident, and my prayers still go out to Chris’s family and the community. As unfortunate as this event was, it happens all over the country every year, and educators and counselors often have to deal with unforeseen issues with their students. In a smaller community like Bennington, events like this shake the whole community. Teachers, coaches, and community members all have to deal with their own emotions while still being a mentor for students. It’s tough.

Teachers and students need to lean on each other for support, and time should be taken to grieve. Catharsis is a powerful tool towards closure, and everyone needs to have their grieving time. I would certainly allow students time to free write about this event or anything they feel they need to write about. This would be an excellent time to use journals where the teacher only reads the work if the student wants him/her to do so. I understand we won’t overcome this in a day or a week, but students need to return to “normalcy” as soon as possible to understand life will go on. Each student and case varies, but we need to treat each case with the same amount of respect and careful consideration. Every student matters, no matter if he/she was the class president, captain of a sports team, or if the student was one absence from getting kicked out. It is always one more life cut short of reaching full potential. We need to learn from these issues, not sweep them under the rug.

Our students are people, and so are our administrators and teachers. I would like to hear about some examples of school guidelines or plans of action that are in place when it comes to death of someone within the school-be it teachers, cook staff, janitors, administrators, coaches, students, etc. Share your story, and let me know what it is like to be on the other side of the “desk”, if you will.

This is another topic for another day, but how can we stop students from feeling invincible? Too many good people are taken because of poor decisions. I am having a hard time dealing with this one. I know the teachers and counselors at Bennington, and I think they do a phenomenal job working with students, but how can we bring down the frequency of teenage-alcohol related accidents?

I was struck last nite by conversations had with some of my friends and fellow teachers. The timelines were the thing, “we are going to be teachers for the next 28 years”, and “what kind of teacher will i be in 10yrs” were some of the comments made. I think that we all want to still be learners and have the passion that we have now for the profession. The trick is how? I know for most just rolling in the wagon ruts will be enough, but the world doesn’t need another crappy teacher, one who will settle and stop learning. I believe that we as a society setup these milestones in our life, graduating high school, getting a degree from college, but those become unconcious roadblocks to our learning. Once achieved we figure, i know it all, or at least i know enough to function at a certain comfortable level. We need to view ourselves and teach our students to be lifelong learners and to continue to strive to make ourselves reach for more and keep becoming something. Putting on new growth can sometimes be uncomfortable, and change will undoubtedly make things messy, but the reward I believe is worth it. Let us redefine ourselves, and while we are at it add in a positive manner to the human conciousness.

Here is our first cutdown version–both Jarred and I had a lot of resistance to this project on the day, we felt as if we did not get down to the heart of things-(i am cutting part of that video now) this is the video we had our colleague Laurie take to a conference–good showpiece but not sure that we are completely happy with it, take a look and watch for further videos concerning this project. thanks for the patience. Let us know about how it turned out and about your own projects that seemed to not go the way you wanted.
One concerning issue is the age gap between the students, the first year teacher, and the rest of the teaching staff. Often times, first year teachers are closer in age to the students than they are to their fellow teachers.

This episode also delves into the issues first year teachers can face when setting up and taking field trips with their classes.

Just a quick note on a meeting that i attended today, it was for a multi-cultural book panel that i am on. It is always interesting to hear the comments and questions that the group presents. The one that stood out to me was the exploration of prejudice and its sneaky way of usually being subtle. I thought that was very insightful. How do we fight it (racism, sexism, ageism, ismism) when it is said as a sidenote, or as a joke from a basicly well rounded co-worker. How do we approach it when it is not overt and the rest of the group seems to let it slide?

Okay, here is a question for all you great educators out there. My girlfriend just called to tell me how bored she was in her first day of a graphic design summer class. Her main “beef” was that the professor spent most of the class [of a seven hour class] explaining the differences between pc’s and mac’s. She felt most of these students knew the material, and that it was a waste of her time. Now I know she was frustrated, and that she probably learned SOMETHING throughout the lecture, but what can teachers do to get students up to speed without halting or “boring” the advanced students on the first day. I worry that this sour first impression can have negative effects on students throughout the first few weeks.

Any suggestions on how to better service all students, or is this time necessary for all students regardless of level?

Thanks, Jarred

I was just in the Black Hills on a cycling trip and i finally had time to think about things. The semester was over and this was a real break for me. I went up with a group from my work, outdoor adventures at UNL. It was a scouting trip for our staff to check out the area around Rushmore for bringing up students on trips. It was a great time, big props to all who went and made it fun. Ok sorry tangent, but what i was thinking about was all the teaching moments that happened. I have a bit of bike knowledge and i was sharing that with people, but also everyone had their own little thing they shared with the group. And we fed off that, as one person taught something, people learned and then they wanted also to share what they had for knowledge. I really believe that sharing is something that is as necessary as air to the human animal. I am still breaking it all down but the fresh air and the amazing backdrops really seemed to relax everyone and remove distraction so that learning happened more naturally. Why do schools have roofs?

Hey Everyone! As I sit here this morning, thinking about Dale biking/camping through South Dakota, I wonder about how this site will change in the next six months. Our goal is to keep producing quality podcasts with interesting people that pose necessary questions. I hope we are accomplishing this thus far! We have been excited to see so many people commenting and emailing us about our progress, and we really want our listeners/visitors to get more involved. This site is not designed to be a show-and-tell. This is to be a community for us all to gather and share ideas, questions, and solutions. Don’t be afraid to send us your ideas and opinions-We want them all.

With summer coming up, it should be a great time for us all to get a little R&R, but please don’t stop contributing to the site. We are still working on our connection with iTunes, so please subscribe to the podcast, and don’t be afraid to call our listener line and leave a voice message that we can incorporate into future podcasts. Your content will help us make the site more useful for everyone.

As always, have a great day and thanks for contributing.
