Running into an old friend

// January 13th, 2010 // Comments

I have taken this place for granted…and have been under appreciating it’s abilities. It’s like that friend you run into after years apart-It’s hard to remember how you fell out of touch in the first place. The fact is relationships take a lot of work to keep strong. I have survived my first semester as a teacher, and I’m loving it (almost) every day :)
I need to now turn back and begin reflecting on how I made it to this point. There are a few student teachers running around the halls today for their first days of their last semester in college. I wish all of you out there in the same boat good luck. Teaching is truly worth everything you put into it. Congratulations, and I hope to be back again to start/join the conversations more in the very near future. Sorry I was away for so long.

    Hello, my name is Melissa Crabb and I am currently a freshman secondary science education major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I am very excited to start on this career path. I noticed that you metioned in your post that you just finised your first semester as a teacher. I was going to ask you to share some of your good and bad first experiences as a new teacher. Also what do you teach? Do you have any advice for future teachers?

    I find myself reflecting back on all sorts of endeavors. When finals roll around, I always think back to the first week when I panicked about the course load or the teacher. But the semesters seem to fly by.
    I will be student-teaching soon, and I am incredibly nervous for the commitment and stress of being in a classroom full time. I will also be coaching which I think will add a whole other dimension to my day. I always hear about how enjoyable and educational student-teaching is, but I’m scared about the work load. I too was hoping someone could shed more light on the experience…

    hello, i am Yue, a sophomore at the university of Nebraska-Lincoln. education is my major and i’m taking a practicum class at a nearby middle school. to actually be with students there in a real class is a different experience ( even though i have being in class rooms for about 12 years already). when i stand at a teacher’s perspective, lot’s of new things come out and i need to learn them gradually.
    anyway, it;s nice too hear a real teacher says that “Teaching is truly worth everything you put into it” and it does encouraging me, thank you!
    and you do not to be sorry for leaving so long, we understand that how hard the work can be for a responsible new teacher.

    As a freshman at UNL, this makes me wonder what it will be like when I get to the point of graduation. Honestly, I’m excited for that moment in time, but I know that when it all comes down to it that I will be nervous and probably asking myself a lot of questions. It is good to know that just because this is a big university that the teachers do care a lot for their students. As a student studying to become a teacher, I realize that letting go of students is going to be difficult yet exciting!

    Hello my name is Montana Jones and I am currently a sophomore secondary education major at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I am so excited to start teaching in a couple years and to help students and their futures. I am also going to become a coach to, and currently help coach baseball at Lincoln Southeast High School and just love working with kids. Please give me some great advice that I may need to know before doing my practicum and student teaching. And let me know about somethings that I may not be prepared for that caught your eye when you began teaching.

    Thanks for such a great post and such encouraging words! As a first year college student, I definitely have my days that I question my ability to be a good teacher. With positive people like you around me, I am re-assured that I will have the help and support I need to become a teacher. I am so passionate about the job and posts like these make me even more excited to start my journey!

    I as well am a student at UNL, and was wondering what it was like as a new teacher? Are you finding situations in which you have no say in things because you are the new teacher? What advice can you give us students, because we can study all we want about the classroom but we really can’t get the real feel until we are in an actual classroom?
